I'm about to buy and fit a cooker hood but have been told that I won't be able to vent it outside as it would have to go through a concrete lintel above the window. Are all cooker hoods able to re-circulate or will I need a specific type? Also, do they work as well or should I just not bother with it?

Thanks

Recirculating cooker hoods make excellent fat collectors but little else. I'm surpised it's not possible to duct the vent away from a lintel.

show us a picture or sketch of your kitchen indicating which are the external walls, and the height between the window and the ceiling.

If you go the recirculating route make sure you change the charcoal filter every three months or so (as per user manual). Most people fit and forget, so after a while the filter isn't doing any good at all and all the hood does is move the steam around.

All a recirculating hood does is move the steam around.

I see many kitchens with black mould on the walls because the fan is not ducted outside.
