reason for SY is although they will not be under any stress whilst in use kitchen KP's are not know for their finese, I have experienced call outs at 11pm because a KP has hauled out a piece of equipment and ripped the iso of the wall, I have yet to find an oil resistant cable that acually is, most start to destabilise after a few months even the synthetic ones,

Another way to get a nice tail from SY (or any other braided cable type) is to use a small screwdriver to pull the strand groups ouf the the braid one at a time.

All the braid strands then sit nice and straight and can be gently twisted to form a tail.

If it is going in to an enclosure, it really should be glanded properly, to ensure that the mechanical load is on the braid. As long as you use glands with a reverseable olive (one way for SWA, the other for copper braid) it is very easy.

There shouldn't be a mechanical load, as the cable should be adequately supported. That's like saying an SWA should have it's 'mechanical load' on the armouring.......

OK, maybe "mechanical load" was the wrong term. "SY should be properly glanded so as to provide strain relief via the braid."

SY in a kitchen really is not the way to go.

the braid isn't there for strain relief.. the outer sheath is..
the braid should be free to move when the cable is bent or twisted..

Thanks for the feed back, I would like to say though in the real world whats intended for a job does not make it automatically the spoken word of what ever diety decided it was, as a old journeyman once told me common sense prevails above all else even dare I say it BS7671, and considering the ammount of retractions, sorry, ammendments that is proposed I rest my case.

terminating the screen ( lets not call it armoured, it's not.. you can cut through it with a knife.. ) is really easy.

strip back the outer, push the braid to get some slack, bend at the outer sheath, using a screwdriver pick a hole in the braid and pull the inner core out of it, pull the braid tight again and now it's empty it will collapse on itself.
sleeve it and either heatshrink over the outer/braid junction, or use tape to tidy it up.

Hmmmm - that didn't work with the 50mm2 4 core SY cable I used last week
Brass SY glands for that one.

I know what you mean though and do the above on a regular basis with 1.5mm2 3 core SY cables.

TBH, to me, common sense says NOT to use this type of cable for the purpose you intend

Lectrician I take your point but if it dont work why do it, honestly i have tried HO5 and 7, heat resistant flex of all sorts, but the oil wins, it even gets into the conduit that why I thought about SY as you can get a better "seal" at the ends but if it doesn't work then I will admit it.

Surely H05 or H07 flex would be sealed just as well as a correctly terminated SY cable using a suitable stuffing/compression gland?
