What I can't understand is the constant reference to the mother's boyfriend as 'Shannon's stepdad' and the alleged abductor as her 'uncle'.
So as well as her biological father, Shannon has four stepdads ???? If this is extrapolated Shannon's mother has five husbands.......

I had to read this twice before I worked out what you meant but you're right. Strictly speaking, in order to qualify for the title of stepfather you have to be married to the mother. Furthermore the 'uncle' in question is no such thing, not being the brother of either of her biological parents and not even of the right generation! I suppose 'great step uncle' - which is still not strictly correct - is just too much of a mouthful.

Political correctness gone mad? I don't think so. More like common usage gone wrong.
