shared or public drain?

Scratching my head when it comes to this drain,we are the start of a row of terraces

most diagrams show that if you are at the start of the row of terraces it is a private drain

would it be common to have the foul drainage from the row of terraces before us in the line (seperated by alleyway) joining on to ours too or is that unlikely?

If a sewer on your land only carries your waste, it's yours, and private. If a sewer, on your land, carries anybody else's waste, its the responsibility of the utilities Co, whether it's a lateral or public sewer.

Flush all your loos and pour water down all you internal and external drains and see which branches have water coming down them.
If one is not used by your place, put a marker in maybe a tissue or something and see if it's been flushed away tomorrow.
My guess is the next row also connect to the drain and it's owned by the water co.

whilst i fully agree with that statement, i am mid-terrace and all 4 front roofs drain from no2 to number 8 that in turn drains via the sewer back to no2 and under the front roof gutter it left 5 mins ago
now i would have though in that instance they are all shared but not 100% sure iff that counts as its not foul dranage

If it's a sewer whether foul or surface then it applies the same way. The 2011 act didn't distinguish, except where the surface water doesn't drain into a sewer but instead drains into a stream or whatever.

Manhole has a 6" through channel on the main run, with evidence of through flow, the 6" line will be the Water Co's responsibility, possible the 4" laterals are private.

Well if one of them (the bottom one) comes from the neighbours house it will not be private. The OP needs to clarify.

That's why I said 'Possible'. Some of builds of that era had 2 laterals to each property, taking the (outside) WC and a gully for the kitchen sink. Dye test will prove.

If the sewer is the responsibility of the utility company, so is the manhole/chamber that connects any private drains. I know this because our lid was broken on the chamber where we T in to the public sewer, and I asked United Utilities, and they kindly came out and replaced it.
