Earlier this year I took down a preexisting retaining wall in our garden in order as part of a wider garden make over.
Then hubris took over, I hired a digger, booked some holiday and went for it! I had fun, the wife is less than impressed with the state of the garden.
The immediate plan is to rebuild the retaining wall, in my own design and slightly further back from where it was originally.
Here is an image of the look that we are trying to achieve.
And here is a small cross section diagram, with some rough measurements.
I am getting close to putting in the footings for the retaining wall, but before I do I want to sense check a few things, and hopefully someone can offer some advice?
Q1 - Can anyone advise how deep the footings should be. The ground is very hard (as can be seen in the first image - 10 inches of soil and then its stone / rock) Would 100 / 150mm suffice?
Q2 - How much of a heel / toe should I include.
Q3 - Is it sensible to treat wall A as the main retaining wall and wall B as essentially a small planter connected to wall A. There fore wall B doesn't need a toe (just working out how wide I need to make the footing)
Q4 - If I include weep holes in wall A, and wall B am I right in assuming that this will work for drainage.
Q5 - any good advice I might need to know?
Thanks in advance!
