Should hardboard always be nailed together?

Quick query.. Getting some laminate floor laid

Just wanted to know whether the hardboard must be nailed together before laying the underlay.

and what kind of nails should be used? If i do not have a nail gun can I simply hammer them down?

Can you not get away with laying laminate floor underlay, it will give some sound protection as well.
