Should I remove tiles in order to fit my new shower tray?

Cowboy came round and broke my shower tray. I now have no choice but to replace shower tray myself. I have researched it and I think I know how it is done. However, the advice seems to be that shower trays now come with a so-called "tile trim" lip, which is incorporated into the wall edge of the tray to prevent water leaking between the tiles and behind the shower. I understand I am to tile on top of this lip. Does this mean I have to remove the existing line of tiles or is there another way to waterproof the edge of the shower tray?

I think removing the tiles would complicate matters a great deal for me.

Yes the trays are meant to be sunk into the wall a little and then you tile over it. No other way of getting a tray with a lip in I'm afraid.
Of course there's nothing to stop you getting a tray with no lip.
