Shower diverter hard to pull up and down

Hi
Does anyone know how to fix a stiff pull up\down shower diverter.
Is there a grip you can buy to put on it to help grip it as it is chrome and has become very stiff to pull up and down please.

How old is it? If it's gone hard to use then chances are it's worn and it'll never work properly again, best bet is to replace it.
