I have a salamander CT 75 Shower pump.

Cold tank in the loft hot tank in airing cupboard pump sits on top of hot tank.

The pump works intermittently from start, switch it off an on a couple of times it will work.
After a couple of mins the shower stops, lower the shower head (type on a hose) and it starts again, then stops after a short while and repeat sequence and it starts again.

Could the pump be worn out its about 4 years old??

Those pumps have wire gauzes on the flexible pipe connectors, check there no sediment or loose scale restricting the flow first

Shouldn't the pump be sited at the base of the cylinder?

I was wondering if it should be at base of cylinder but it's been ok for most of the time

Your shower mixer may have filters on the inlets too - check these are clear. Also make sure shower head isn't scaled up.
