the main switch on the ceiling should you turn it off when finished with shower or should you leave it on all the time.
someone told me if you keep turning it on and off the switch doesnt last long please help

You do not need to turn it off in normal day to day use, but there is no harm in doing so.The contacts in the switch could possibly only wear out prematurely if you were to turn it off when the shower was running (unlikely)

I turn mine off when not in use, if your mate's switch doesn't last long, there must be something wrong, is it a decent switch? is he operating it under load? or did he just not tighten the terminals properly and looking for excuse for his wife for why it burnt up?

Only a minute amount to power a neon in the pull switch and possibly a neon/LED in the shower itself - milliamps!
