Hi,

I have a gutter run that overflows due to possible lack of incline? It's 7Ft a corner then 11Ft with the down pipe at the end of the 11Ft. It goes over the soil vent 1/2 way along the 11Ft, so can't be lowered there.

I just tried a bucket of water at the far end, and it flowed nicely, then left water and residue sitting all along it. The residue is partly sand from the tiles and partly green.

I am going to paint the gutter (plastic) or if really necessary, I'll fit a new one. (I don't want to do it if possible) Would a new one be better flowing as it would be shiny?

Cheers, Camerart

All gutters will have some residue in the bottom, shiney gutters make no difference, and they soon become non-shiney gutters.

The over flowing is unlikely to be caused by the silt, but having said that gutters do require regular cleaning out in any case.

Hi W,

Ok, thanks. It looks like I can't do much about it, so just keep cleaning them.

Try and determine why its over flowing though. Is it really so much silt, or another cause?

Hi W,

As mentioned in my first sentence, there is a soil pipe that the gutter goes over, so the slope can't be altered, I've cleared the silt, and the flow isn't good enough, it looks like I'll just have to accept it.

Typically, you could have a gutter along the length of a house that is level, and it will cope with everyday rain from the roof without over flowing.

So if your much shorter length of gutter over flows, then there must be another issue causing it.

Hi W,

Any ideas?

Lol. No sorry, can't see from here.

Describing the "overflowing" and the conditions in which it occurs might help.

Hi W,

There's more than one issue with the gutter/drainage. Life's too short, I'll leave it as it is, EML (even more laughs)

Cheers, C.

Seems a bit odd that the gutter goes round the vent pipe- usually the other way round:unsure:

Hi N,
It goes over the soil pipe (cast iron), or should I have said the soil pipe goes under the gutter in the usual way. This is why I can't make the gutter slope more.

Ten years ago, I would have fit a new soil pipe and gutter (slightly lower at that point), but it's ten years later:)
