Old Tom is reputed to be slow of wit. So much so that the locals in the pub regularly play a game with him to demonstrate.

They place a 50 pence coin and a £1 coin on the table, and ask Tom to take the one he likes. Tom always takes the 50p, 'because it's bigger and shinier'.

A stranger pointed out the £1 coin was more valuable. Tom thanked him for his advice and agreed the stranger was correct, but said he preferred to carry on playing the game his way.

Why?

Once he started taking the pound coin, the game would have no point and would quickly stop.
As he keeps taking the 50p, the joke could keep going for quite a while, so he would take more in the long run.

Here's an old one:

A man goes into a hardware store looking for a particular thing(s) to buy. The pricing is 10p for 1, 20p for 10, and 30p for 100

What is he buying?

What is special about the following numbers?

I have 6 chains, each chain has 5 links.

If it costs 10p to cut a link, and 90p to weld a link, what is the cheapest I can have an endless chain made for, using all the links?

Oi you lot, queue jumping, what about this one?

Too difficult for you........... :P

An Arab sheikh tells his two sons to race their camels to a distant city to see who will inherit his fortune. The one whose camel is slower will win. The brothers, after wandering aimlessly for days, ask a wise man for advise. After hearing the advice they jump on the camels and race as fast as they can to the city. What does the wise man say?

One cut, all loose ends onto this, and one weld to close it

A train left Manchester at midday and travelled at 60mph towards London. At exactly the same time a train left London and travelled at 100mph towards Manchester.

When the trains met, which one was furthest from London?

I've got no idea, but they were both the exact same distance from Manchester.
