sink wall fixing..

I

imamartian

I recently fitted a sink in my downstairs loo.... the sink is small but i have problems with it being securely fitted to the wall.

It is fitted with two metal brackets... from the front they are normal rectangles... and from the side, if you imagine a capital Y and delete one of the two upper up rights (?)... you have a metal plate to screw to the wall and a slot where the sink sits... Problem is that the metal is quite flexible, and if you lean on the sink, the leverage means the sinks moves quite a lot, so you can't seal it against the wall, and the plumbing seems to be playing a part in the support which is not good.

There are also two screwholes, but they are at the bottom of the wall, so add no further support...

Have i missed sommat?

Ta.

Little trick, apply a good load of silicone mastic to the rear of the basin, the surface that backs on the wall and use those fixing holes.
Just be careful not to crack the basin with screws, if you have any old tap/rubber washers about then use those to proctect the basin from the screw.

ta kev, but...
drill into what? the only available porcelain is around the bottom..... alongside the original screwholes and brackets.... should i add a photo?

Whats up? Did I miss something

Isn't OP talking about basin with 2 single brackets? Always found the basin wobbles on these brackets so I also apply silicone to the rear, use the 2 fixing holes that are provided on the basin itself and that normally fixes them lovely. :D

yep, a load of silicone or better still no nails, once its tiled it shouldnt go anywhere

too late !!! it's in, and tiled... could i flex the sink down and squeeze some no-nails behind it now? would that work? or would it just rip the paint and paper off the plasterboard?

And how tight can you go with those screws into porcelain?

Well hot and cold is on speedfit conns, turn off water and push those off, surely you have service valves? Undo trap and take basin off its brackets. Apply mastic to the rear of the basin place back on the brackets and fit back the water connections. It would pay you to wedge it back firmly with something like I mentioned before also.
