Hi Folks!

Happy New Year and all the best for 2025!

I have a query to do with the waste from a sink with a connection to a washing machine discharge pipe.

The pipework under the sink includes this pipe:

The pipe fits under the main trap for the sink. The outlet of this pipe (on the left) goes to the outside drain. The pipe outlet on the right is not required / not in use.

The blue bung (?) fits into the right hand end (circled below) but isn't a snug fit and has come loose several times flooding the cupboard under the sink - primarily when the washing machine drains.

So. First question. Can I get a pipe like this, but without the 'extra' inflow spur on the right (circled in red above). Effectively, just a simple 'J' shaped pipe.

Overall length is around 10 inch / 250mm.

If so, what is this pipe called and where can I get one (can't seem to find one on Toolstation / Screwfix / B&Q websites). A weblink to a sitable pipe would be fantastic.

Failing that, could I get a threaded stop end to seal this spur instead of the ill-fitting blue bung.

Can't seem to find any suitably-sized stop ends either! A link to a sitable part would be also be fantastic.

Easy enough for me to do when I've got the right part / know what to ask for / know where to get it from. Just can't seem to find something suitable.

Thanks in advance,

XRD

All the best for 2025 too -

There's supposed to be a blank washer in that nut that would then have a rubber seal in it and no need for the blue bung.

Either that or that appliance end should have the actual spigot in it, that nut would then have a rubber seal and the blue bung would fit into that.

So either this

or this

Thanks Rob.

Still puzzled however.

The nut that I have has a hole in the middle (see the last picture in my original post) but the picture that you posted in your reply seems to be a solid centre (i.e a kind of 'cap' rather than a 'nut').

Would a washer seat against the bule bung & seal the pipe and if so, what is the correct diameter rubber washer that I'd need?

If I need a solid 'cap', what is the diameter I'd need?

Can't really take the pipe off and take it to a shop as the kitchen sink is in almost constant use.

Thanks,

Dave

If you look at the second picture, you can see the nut around the appliance spigot? So the nut would have a hole in it and would have a sealing washer and the blue bung fits into it. Looks like the spigot section is missing from yours, maybe taken when the previous owners took their appliance out?

Usually that nut would be replaced by a blank sealing cap, which is the first pic. Just get either a new appliance outlet connector or a blanking nut, should have them in SF/TS. They are normally only one size.

Thanks for the reply but sadly no. I got one of those and it is too big.

I don't know the size of that part - I'm guessing an inch - but I got the 32mm Washing Machine cap (73053) and the 40mm one (96079) but they were both too big.

Difficult to take the part with me as it is part of my daughter's kitchen sink and in almost constant use!

Nope. I fitted it for my daughter when I put the new 1 1/2 bowl s/steel sink in - but that was nearly 2 years ago now and I can't remember whether the waste came with the sink or I got it separately. Don't recall it having an 'Appliance Spigot' there (or a washer), just the bule bung and the nut.

That would probably be my next try, really you need to tell your daughter she needs to do without the sink for an hour or so and take the part with you, I'd imagine it'll be more inconvenient having to replace the cabinet when it's completely ruined than managing an hour without using the kitchen sink.

There's a City Plumbing nearby, I think I'll drop down there with the part and see what they have.

There was a Graham Plumber's Merchant on the way home and I went to call in, but it appeared to be permanently shut : (

Meantime, I have cut a 30mm blank out of 2mm acrylic and I'll try to fabricate my own stop end (and gunk the hell out of it with silicone)!

Sorted.

Took the ‘J’ shaped pipe to City Plumbing.

Result is a 1” brass stop end (they didn’t have a plastic version).

Pipe now sealed and hopefully no leaks!

Thanks to all who replied/offered suggestions. Much appreciated.

All the best for ‘25
