So could a large transformer be used as a watt less heat source for low cost domestic heating.

Give us a clue what "wattless current" is
Just put an ammeter on the primary to my 110V transformer and it's drawing a steady 1.8A with no secondary load on it.
Not sure why there would be much difference between a yellow box and a wall mount transformer of the same rating...

I don't know about the phrase, but I presume that we're talking about current through a purely reactive load, which dissipates no power (hence 'wattless').Give us a clue what "wattless current" is

It might almost be - provided you were very careful not to let any cooking pots (or any other metal objects) anywhere near it

I am traveling to Sri Lanka to do some home renovation to family's ancestral home. Don't want to buy tools there cause it is a huge hassle and selection is limited. I did buy some power tools there but it is much more convenient and cheaper to take my American tools with me.
Any of you familiar with this type of portable transformer? They are made in China.
Above is 3kva , intermittent I assume.
There is a 5kva one also.
I suspect that is not a transformer, but an electronic voltage converter. Avoid.
The yellow brick type 3.3 KVA is adequate for your needs.
Here in the US , those Black metal enclosure units are advertised as step down or step up transformers . Large chain stores like SEARS sell them.
Below US distributor of high end German power tools sells them for use with German 220v handheld woodworking tools. But it is referred to as a " Voltage Regulator"

Since I am using American 15 amp power tools , I would need 15 amp output sockets for the transformer? The yellow tool transformers in UK come with 16amp output sockets right?
Carroll & Meynell make a portable transformer for American tools with 15amp output sockets. I am planning to buy either the 2kva or 3kva (continuous rating ) ones shown below.
