I'm about to tile a bathroom and when all the original tiles have been removed, they have completely removed the plaster skim coat. Is it essential that the wall should be re-skimmed prior to fixing the new tiles (onto existing sound bonding coat) or is it sufficient to apply PVA or any other substance and the re-tile. any help would be appreciated

You need to skim over the bonding, don't apply tiles directly to bonding or browning.
If area is to be tiled, the skim finish does not need to be spot on but as level and flat as you can get it, you can leave it a little rough as this will help key the tiles.

Rather than use Multi or filler which you must let fully dry before tiling (10 days), you can patch repair using powder cement adhesive (which you will need if your tiles are much larger than 250mm) or a quickset render which you can tile over the next day. Also be aware that plaster has a maximum tile weight limit of 20 kg/sqm including up to 4 kg/sqm for adhesive & grout.

Do not use standard PVA to prime any tile surface; if you use powder adhesive you need an acrylic primer over gypsum plaster to avoid the risk of reaction.

Lots of things to catch out the inexperienced when tiling so take some time to read the Tiling forum sticky & archive posts before you do anything; it could prevent you making some disastrous & potentially expensive mistakes.

A BIG THANKYOU to both PrenticeBoyofDerry & Richard C for taking the time to answer my query. I suppose it's easy to say now that I was going to re- skim because I just had the BIG DOUBT !! but gotta say guY's it does help when all you have to do is YELL ! and the likes of you two guy's are there in a flash. THANKS AGAIN.

Internet forums are a wonderful thing when used correctly & not “trolled” into oblivion which seems to be an ever increasing pastime for some  . Who would have thought in the late 90’s that within just a few years you would be able to get more or less instant specialist advice on practically any subject you care to think of, at a few keystrokes; but prudence is always the word ;)

Hi Went along with Richard C's call ultimately, as due to time constraints it allowed me to start the tiling after the Bal Quickset had been applied (Left it about 3 hours after completing the coat, and used Bal PDA Acrylic primer)
This way it allowed me to do other things whilst the wait was on. In all the years in all the bathrooms I have never had a "COMPLETE" loss of Skim coat right back down to the "Scratch coat".
Alas You know "when I were a lad" as we say here in Lancashire, and in 1967 when I started my Apprenticeship, ALL drawing's used to be produced with the words "IF IN DOUBT ASK" printed on them and so it was that it became the "NORM" for MOST But certainly "NOT ALL" to ask if they didn't know or needed a solid shoulder to lean/cry on. So when it was that it came my time to "ASK " for assistance, it was as you so succinctly put it "NO PROBLEM" I remember years ago, first seeing the old Bumper sticker " GET YOURSELF A TEENAGER, WHILST THEY STILL KNOW EVERYTHING " but you know it's not just teenager's.

" CHEERS "

PS Incidentally the "handle" WOBBLYBOBBLY" comes from the fact that my Knee's are Knackered & I'm Called Bob !!

PPS Have you tried Snickers Floorlayer's Trousers, with the "Proper" Snickers Knee-pad's THEY ARE BRILLIANT Bit expensive But what price your Knee's ?. Wish I'd have had them 20 year's ago as I probably wouldn't now be using my Wobblybobbly Handle !!
