come on then oh wise ones. Why is a skip called a skip?
(got asked at work today and couldnt give an answer!)

I am not to sure but one thing i remember is, mines use skips to move the coal around and they are pretty much the same shape.

Why is a dog called a dog?

because if it was called a cat it would sound daft when it went woof!

i just couldnt see the logic in it. Dumpster makes a bit of sense, but where does skip originate from?

Maybe it is a maritime saying as in an opened top vessel...er that would have a skipper in charge....?

Maybe comes from skep? - which is is a large basket - used on farms.

Or was a skip on wheels called a larder (correction Lada)?

Tony

Maybe it comes from the more common use of the word "skip" as in "leave out, omit". Put in things that you are going to leave out of whatever you're doing.

Got me wondering too, so did a few clicks

Apparently Skip is a variant of skep - an old Norse term for basket.

And you all new that Richard Biffa introduced waste skips into the UK in the 1960's
