Quickie (I'll try and be as succint as possible, I tend to ramble :( ).

I want to colour my skirting (when it arrives) to match as best possible to my floor (harvester oak is the best desciption!).
In the past I have varnished skirting (didn't really like the effect - bad choice in texture/colour perhaps) and waxed another set (wasn't bri-wax - home brand stuff - absolute nightmare to put on and not the most desriable effect).
I was thinking of using stain this time; I like the 'matt' effect for a start. I can't seem to see a great deal of choices for wood staind though - seems to be geared towards the 'varnishing market'.
If I were to use stain - would this be protected - don't really fancy whacking a coat of clear varnish on top...or are there decent matt finish (au contrare?) out there?

Thanks.

Thanks WYL - that looks like awesome stuff. I've got my future floor fixed in my brain and the hardwax oil I'll be eventually coating the 'herringbone' patterned floor with!

Have the skirting arrive tomorrow - quick question: will the beading & skirting gel/silicone stick the wooden skirting to exposed brickwork? Not quite figured that out yet (wouldn't really want to go down the route of drilling...
