Anyone know where / if you can get small dimmer switch modules which would fit inside a galv conduit box? Could drill a lid to put the knob on. Would only need to be 100w or even a 40w one would be ok. Is there anything out there?

I have had this problem before. It was a few years ago, but I could not find anything.

I ended up having to fit a surface-mounted pattress onto the galv box....

Customer didn't like it, but I couldn't do owt else...

Could the light be a fluorescent with a 1-10V dimming ballast?

Or would there be room inside it for a dimmer module? If so, it might be worth experimenting to see if one would work with the potentiometer removed, and put some distance away with wires running to it.

OOI, why does it have to be a conduit box?

My problem was that during a rewire, I took off an old landing switch to find a besa box behind it....

Ah - I can see how that would be a snag. I took an old landing switch off at my Mum's once, to find a wooden back box and little toothed lugs behind the switch plate which moved outwards and bit into the sides of the box as the screws were tightened.

I assumed, (as it would now seem for no good reason) that flyingspark's situation was surface mounted conduit.

Are PVC fittings compatible? Just thinking that a white 15mm extension ring wouldn't look too bad, and would probably give the depth needed.

This will amuse you all.

It may well be.

It might be me who has jumped the gun and assumed the conduit is recessed.

It is indeed wall mounted galv conduit.

It's a feed up to a light, a single g9 capsule lamp spotlight. Customer likes the industrial look and would have liked the dimmer on the round besa box..

Depth isn't the only issue, it's the size of the modules and the size of the round box!

I assume that a square adaptable box is just a bit too industrial?

Aluminium Pratley?

I was going by memory - thought some dimmers would fit inside a round box it it were deeper.

So...

All I'm left with is seeing if you could dismount the pot from a dimmer module, and find somewhere else for it.

Or - if the customer would be OK with seeing a square plate behind the round box, you could recess the dimmer into the wall, and use a shaft extender to have the knob on the besa box.

If the depth is a problem, you could fit another box on top, but you still have the issue of length.

How about a remote dimmer hidden elsewhere with just the control potentiometer in the BESA box? There are systems designed to be used this way as opposed to just removing the pot from a standard dimmer module, which might suffer from or cause interference...

Being from a theatre background, I'd probably do it with something like an Anytronics Pro Dim, but that might be a little over the top and or over budget for your application. There must be a domestic version?
