I vaguely remember there being a planning issue with small houses on big plots if the house is smaller than 85sq metres you cannot demolish it and build a larger dwelling. But I cannot seem to find any details of this presumption on google

That would depend on your LPA’s policies. One of my LPA’s used to have a ‘Small Dwellings Policy’ that related to replacement dwellings and extensions to dwellings, which were located in the Countryside or Green Belt. They used to want to retain small dwellings of up to 85sq.m.

I wonder if you're thinking of the requirement for 'conservation area consent' for demolition of a building of more than 115 cubic metres within a conservation area.
