I'll bet the oil pump has a slight leak on the shaft seal which is leaking into the burner motor unseen - but high in smell!

After a couple of hours running, any residual oil should have evaporated. If the smell lingers, there must still be a leak.
Persevere with your search checking all joints and taps using some tissue. That never lies.
Check the pump and if it's on a tiger loop check the return line
