Hello All,

We have a very bad , hard to locate sewage/cabbage smell coming from near the washing machine (although the machine itself doesn't smell).

Any ideas on the root cause?

Is there anything we can do to get rid of the smell or mask the smell in the meantime? Maybe a cleaning product.

The landlady is selling in a couple of months so would like to avoid any expensive plumbing jobs if necessary, although we are getting quite desperate.

We are a house of girls... the sort of girls that a rubbish at DIY.

Any suggestions welcome.

Lizzie

Check the drainage arrangement for the washing machine. The outlet hose may join onto the u bend just under the sink, like this: http://www.screwfix.com/prods/12794/Plumbing/Wastes-and-Traps/Sink-Washing-Machine-Trap-40mm
If so this is unlikely to be your problem, and im unsure what else to suggest, but.....

Alternatively it may hook into a standpipe, like this: http://www.screwfix.com/prods/18640/Plumbing/Wastes-and-Traps/Washing-Machine-Trap-40mm#
If this is the situation the standpipe may be clogged with congealed soap, hair, clothes fibres etc. Needs a good clean out or replacement. (If you decide to use chemicals to clean it out, then please exercise caution they can cause nasty burns to skin.)

There is even the possibility its hooked into a standpipe without a trap (U bend) in which case you cant do much about the smell. Hope this is of some help to you.
