Hi all

Iv got a smoke alarm that started beeping as though the battery has run out. Upon inspection I can’t get the case off and also it says connection to mains? I don’t think it is as it’s on a solid concrete floor above and no wires coming to and from. But before I go ripping it apart can anyone tell me if this is battery or mains? Please see photos. Thanks in advance
M

It is an AICO smoke alarm.
I think it is the "Ei141"
And they are normally Mains, with a battery backup. It beeps when this battery runs out.

Some have issues removing them (I find them fine, but I might now have the knack).
Push narrow (4mm) screw driver 1cm into slot and slightly pull down screwdriver to release catch, and then push smoke alarm sideways firmly to slide top half of smoke alarm away from screwdriver by bout 3cm. It then drops down.
You should disconnect mains first, but not always needed as the mains connection to the base (that stays on the ceiling) is designed to be finger safe.

It then has a backup 9V battery that needs replacing.
Also hoover it though vents whilst you have it off ceiling.
It may keep beeping for a while after removing from mains and battery (at least mine do).
With new battery place then slide back in again.

If it has failed early, then they are simple to replace as they still sell then and you only need to slide a new one in place.

Manual with picture instructions to remove is here:

Thankyou so will I need someone to come out and look at it?

If you are renting yes.

If you own house, nope, just follow the instructions above or in link.

Thanks guys it took a while to manage to get it off and be brave with the fuse box (whimp) but it’s off and battery’s out will buy a new one and replace tomorrow thanks for your help!

Pleasure,
Although ... I am less than happy with the thought of you not having a smoke alarm until you get a new battery.

Get two batteries, one for next time.

You can turn Fuse Box back on again now (even with smoke alarm off the ceiling as it has safe contacts). And its best to switch it on again otherwise any other smoke alarms on that mains circuit will start to drain their backup battery.

Also when this one is fitted again, press the test button so it sounds, then keep button pressed for another 5 seconds and that it will sound any other alarms that are connected to this one.
