Smoke alarm position

Hi folks... bit of advice regarding smoke detector location in a garage please...

We have a double garage, half of the ceiling is boarded the other half open... should I locate the smoke detector on the ceiling or is it better fitted up in the 'loft' bit?

Put it this way , if a fire started in the loft section how would you know if you installed the fire detector below it?
