All i do all day is sit in an armchair and watch the telly, some day i am going to do something really exciting like getting out of my chair and turning it on.

You should be very careful here. Without the required training and fitness levels you could injure yourself or others. Take it easy and build up to it gradually rather than risk it all at the first try
 
I agree with Tony, try some light leg exercises whilst in your chair for a couple of weeks first.

Also try and build a little strength in your arm so you can lift it to turn the TV on, (w@nking works well).
