What's the best aggregate to use for a DIY soakaway? 20mm gravel? Mot type 1? I've read it wants to be 40mm? But type one varies from 40mm to dust

soakaways used to be just hardcore, like bricks and bits of paving slab.

modern soakaways are usually empty vessels -typically made with aquacell crates -if you have to buy the aggregate to form a soakaway, I would suggest buying some aquacell crates instead -they have far more capacity.

sometime you can get kits on ebay which include enough geotextile fabric and cable ties

The last thing you'd want to use is type 1.

When people say 40mm, they mean 40mm washed stone with no fines. Round stone (dug) is better than crushed (blasted). Looks like a pebble beach. Lots of air voids.
Depends what is available locally. If you had lots of rubble to get rid of, just dig a big hole and use that.
