I'm putting in a down stairs toilet, and it will be about 4/5 meters from the soil stack. The house has a cellar, and i think that their is drainage below the level of the cellar floor outside the house, Am I OK to extend the ground work underneath the cellar floor to below where the new toilet is going to go, so that i can just go straight down from toilet in to the new drainage. And also will I have to get inspected by a building inspector? Cheers bob

The new drainage will require inspection by the LBCO. Work out where the existing drain runs/access chambers are, pay the fee and call them in.....they have the final say.

In theory there is nothing to stop you extending the existing drain run (assuming it’s yours!), it’s how you do it, connecting up to it & the necessary access for clearing blockages that may cause problems. The maximum permitted height for direct connection of a w/c into a drain invert is 1.3m from the floor (base of toilet) but yours will probably exceed that. Anything over this has to be on a vented stack either external & open or, internally, fitted with an air admittance valve; an air admittance valve must be above the highest point of overflow of any other appliance on the system for obvious reasons! The other alternative is to fit a macerator but, personally, I would avoid these like the plague! You can download a free copy of the Building regs. Part H here;
