Soldering lead pipe closed

I remember the old boys claiming they used to fry eggs in it,never tried it myself.
I started college in 78 we were taught how t lead wipe, form T pieces etc,but generally by then,we converted to copper, and repiped.

You want to identify the main water supply material, and its stop-cock(s) location(s), and the run of the service. Test the shut-off(s).

As above, trace the lead pipe to its source Tee. If there's any chance that its gas, live or redundant, call a gas safe.

Forget about lead wiping or lead "soldering" if you just want to cut & cap the water pipe then MDPE caps are available.

Tallow and plumbers metal are still available.

O.P. whereabouts in somerset is the property?

Not having tallow I have used LARD. Stinks a bit though!

No lead pipe for new/altered situations is permissible.

Even for water, you're supposed to use the correct fittings - hammering over the end doesn't qualify!

Cut the pipe then clean the inside with a shavehook or file, flux the inside then clamp or hammer it closed (flat) then solder across. It is not difficult but take it steady with the blowtorch.Or just buy a leadlock fitting to copper.
That’s exactly what I did in my first house.
