solenoid tester???

Saw one of these being advertised when i was picking a valve up from a local parts centre.

Looks like a pen.

How do they work. Seems like a magnet lights them up. But is'nt a solenoid a magnet so how would you know if the solenoid was working or not??

They contain a Hall effect (!) detector and respond to a magnetic field!

Most solenoids have a soft iron core and do not demonstrate any remanance when the current ceases!

Few boiler engineers use them but they can be quite useful I suppose to quickly confirm that a solenoid is powered.
