thanks for the info on Artex, another one now, We have a solid floor and obviously the radiatir pipes are attached to the skirting board, how can I hide the pipes? cut a channel in the floor ??

Yes,you can cut a channel for pipe but must be wider to take the pipe insulation to protect the copper pipe against cement (that if you do have copper pipe) Normally you have 50mm floor screed which sit on top of concrete oversite so it should be deep enough then you would have to extend the pipe etc.If you going to use a grinder it will produce a lot of dusts.Sometimes it's easier to make a box skirting type to cover the pipe and if you're fussy then you would have to do the whole room to match!

Another thought,you probably can chop it into the wall behind the skirting board and maybe use a square timber nailed to the top & bottom of the skirting board so the skirting board looks thicker etc.
