Hi All.

I am trying to identify appropriate material for some removable panels in a kitchen wall. Behind the panels are cable trays, plumbing and some roof void etc.

This is proving difficult, would appreciate suggestions.

Specifications:

- Moisture resistant (or waterproof)
- Fireproof, minimum 30minute rating
- One side smooth enough for paint finish
- Relatively lightweight
- Normal board sizes ( i.e. upto 8ftx4ft)

These panels will be 6ft off the floor, hence the lightweight.

The need to be removeable eliminates gypsum type boards.

I am struggling to find rated boards with all four qualities (or even the first three in fact).

Alternatively, if i were to use Masterboard or equivalent, how can i get a smooth (as plaster) finish on the board?

Suggestions appreciated.

You could laminate your masterboard with 6mm MDF to give you a paintable surface. MDF isn't waterproof but it does perform quite well with a good thick coat of silk emulsion on it.

Masterboard, and all other similar cement boards have a smooth side which is suitable for direct painting
