Just saw this critter by my back door - never seen a spider with such a big body, over a centimeter just for the body part. Anyone an idea what type of spider it is? Couldn't see much in markings but got this photo with phone camera and best could get in the dark

Is it a Black Lace-Weaver? The mother lives an interesting life, guarding her eggs then when the baby spiders emerge, they eat her.

Gross! Thanks loads tho, had a google after your post. Certainly seems like one. Says can bite nasty so that's my windows closed
