Hi,

I’ve had some work completed by a builder recently including moving a light switch. The wiring has been spliced and then covered with electrical tape, to then be plastered over.

I have a couple of questions:
1. Should a spliced connection be covered with electrical tape
2. How should the wiring be plastered over?

Thanks

With a cable joint one should need a key or tool to access the joint, and the cable should be physically sound as well as electrically sound, so it needs some form of cable retention, also it needs to be kept dry inside the cable, there are devices and methods to do this, and self amalgamating tape can form a water proof barrier, however is never sets and when used common to put standard insulation tape over it.

Without undoing the joint one can't know how it has been done, and the normally method is to get an electrician to do electrical work and get a minor works certificate or other showing the electrician is willing to put his name to the work.

So the big question is why would one ask a builder to move a switch? We should use maintenance free methods of joining a cable before we plaster over it, the only person who knows if the joint is maintenance free is the person who has made the joint.
