Split compression fitting

Just found a 22mm straight coupling in the vent pipe of my F&E tank with a crack in the threaded section all the way round. Above the water level so no leak fortunately. Only thing I can see if that the pipe end had been cut at an angle so I wonder if the force was being taken "one-sided" in the coupling ? Pipe didn't appear to be under any great stress. Or had it been overtightened in the past?
 
Chances are that happened when it was fitted, fault in the casting probably, pretty hard to split a fitting by tightening it I reckon.
