ive been gived a spot welder with rods and mask but no info on how to work it any ideas

A spot welder doesnt use rods.
Maybe an arc welder?

It`s a Brazing Arc set........about as much use as a choc. teapot 
The rods are carbon .......you connect to an arc welder and adjust the gap @ the rods tip to make an "electric flame" .............before the MIG became available to the masses..........that`s the sort of crap we had to try and repair rotted cars with Oxy-Acet. used to cost an arm+leg too
