Could i get away with just filling the joints and screw holes with a filler instead of taping and filling on a new plasterboard wall which was done with square edge plaster board? Its not getting skimmed it will be getting lining papered then papered on top

Square edge plasterboard joint filling

the filler will crack and fall out and you will see the line. Future removal of the paper will ruin the plasterboard. Why are you avoiding having it skimmed?
