there is no such thing as a standard window width. an architect or designer should make an opening to suit either half or full bricks. this will be in proportion to the surrounding masonry and leave enough
meat at the returns, to satisfy strength issues. internal returns should be able to accommodate at least curtains, or whatever the design requires.
in the old days of off-the-shelf timber windows, these would be bricked in on site, and the brickwork made to suit the window. i think the measurements could be divided by 112.5 but don't quote me on that.
