Hi All,

I have a first floor extension similar to the one in the photo below, but about half the span (~3.3m span with two columns). The photo shows that they used a steel beam with a plate welded to the underside, but installed the beam to carry the outer leaf rather than the inner one!

What I think would be a better detail is the one below (Option 1); however, this brought up the issue of the corner bits (in red and yellow) left unsupported.
As a solutuion, I thought of either cantilevering Beam 1 with its plate over the column (Option 2), but the beam edge would be visiable from the sides, or extending Beam 1 above the column to carry Beam 2 and extend the plate for both a little bit (Option 3). Calculations will be provided obviously.

Can I have your thoughts, please?

Wouldn't matter. I could knock a half bat out of the corner of any brick built wall, of any bond you care to choose, and nothing would happen to the rest of the structure

Pick whichever one you like the aesthetic of most. Dare say you'd be able to do a design that deletes the columns if you so wish
