Steel beam covered with plastic sheeting?

As part of a extension made to the side of my property a steel beam was needed to support the brickwork on top. My builder then proceeded to cover this up with this plastic sheeting which looked odd to me. When I questioned him he said this was the correct way to cover this.

Is he right? Visually it looks awful

Was gonna say it looks like a newsagents. Terrible brickwork. What is he hiding ???
