Hi there,

New to the forum but in the planning stages of an extention in east yorkshire.

I have had a quote for steel work to be calc'd at £550+VAT plus an additional £75+VAT per site visit.

Is this the going rate?

I am having 5 steels calc'd up to create open plan rooms all with cavity brick/block walls above.

Thanks in advance for info.

Thanks, Dominic

Possibly, sounds a bit much but we don't know how much work is involved. I would be sending the engineer all of the existing and proposed drawings and telling him what walls are structural and the direction of the floor joists etc etc to reduce his fee and avoid his site visit and ensure it's clear as to what he has to do, if you're not giving him any of that he'll have to assess it himself and will rightly charge you for it.

if you have a builder you are using, ask him -they often know good S/E's

Its hard to say on price, all depends on how much info you gave for pricing and how much work is involved.

Maybe its a bit much, but not stupidly expensive either......

£100 minimum ber beam is normal, and the site visit is about right.

But there should be a volume discount!

And then whether you need the beams, the SE's involvement and if they are going to be way over-spec'd is another matter

I recently has a SE come out that my builder recommended he charged me £375 which included one calculation(beam) also a size visit. He then was £75 each one after that

Thanks for the advice.

I will get the architect to send over the info highlighted to keep the site visit down to a minimum.

Also very good friends with a builder who may suggest a different S/E as the architect has pick his own.

Will keep you posted. More input welcome

Calculating beams that are already decided is one thing if you know the design. If he's doing structural design it'll bump it up a lot as he has to think about how to hold everything up best.
A good se will save their fee, but hard to know what Gogood is

The se is calcing up my requirements already drawn up and designed by the architect so like you mention, there shouldn’t be a fee for the design element.

My builder mate actually uses this se as well as 2 others so I will get quotes from all 3 to see what’s best ground.

Eh? Of course there's a design element, an architect may well say he expects beams here and there but that's about as far as his remit goes. And if the SE needs a site visit he's clearly not getting the design you think he is

Sorry badly worded by me, I meant if he's inputting into the higher level design working with the architect, or just designing specific beams.

No site visits have been confirmed. It was just his initial price notification in the event of one. Hoping the architect can provide all info required.
