can you tell me what the permissable step is out of the back door.

We have a step in place but council say its too low, bearing in mind its been there for 60 years.

about a total of 5 bricks drop with a concrete step that is half way up from the floor just below DPC

Yes that's too high if you were to try to get away with that nowadays. You'll be limited to around 220mm if new build although access at other than the principle entrance is somewhat negotiable but if your step is 375 (5 bricks) that's way too high. Or are you saying there is a 5 brick drop between the cill and the ground level with a step in between? What are the actual heights of the steps? Is this for an extension or what? Can you elaborate a bit more?

its and old terrace house that has had a toilet added to the back in the 40's 50's
The step is cill to floor 5 bricks, there is however a step around two bricks up from the floor so the most step is 3 bricks
the step is about 150 wide against the wall, to step onto and about 1000mm long the door

Just out of interest, how and why are the LA involved? Are these new steps or existing access to/from a commercial building?

its a rented house and they are from health and safety

HHrhs or somethin like that, a right old jobsworth here

Are you the landlord ? Are they trying to take enforcement action as a Category 1 Hazard ? Its HHSRS ie Housing Health and Saftey Rating System.
Landlords have a duty to make sure houses conform to the HHSRS standards,if the LA is involved I assume the tenant has complained or you have applied for a grant ?
