Hi all. Building a step for my Gran whose getting on a bit. The total rise is about 1 meter and length about 1.5/2 meters. The rise on each step is non standard so about 10/11cm . Is it possible to build? If so how many steps are required. Thank you

John

For a safe stair for your gran you would ideally be looking at something a bit higher than those figures you're quoting, look at something that fits within the guidelines of an ambulant stair, that's not to say it has to comply with anything just that the risers/goings stated are suitable. And a handrail on each side goes without saying. You would need to tell us the exact total rise for us to give you the rise of each step?

Thanks for replying. The total rise is 1 meter. She understands they will be outwith regulations, the rise is the issue due to bad health hence the 10/11 cm. 2 meters is probably the total run length.

If she’s currently able to step up 110mm but not 150mm, beware that by the time you’ve built it she may be unable to step up 110mm and need something even easier. Consider installing a ramp instead.

Thanks. I'm just looking for dimensions which fit the above, step rise etc
I know it's not standard but struggling to work out sizes. Ty

You’re struggling to divide 1m by 100 or 110mm to get that it needs 9 or 10 steps?

yes. But can I build that over 2 metres. And whats the run?

So now you want me to divide 2m by 9 or 10 and get 200 - 220mm ?

Edit: by “run”, do you mean “going”? If not, what?

That of course gives you a horribly dangerous stair. A 200mm going is less than the length of anyone’s foot. A person with limited mobility needs to be able to put their foot solidly on the step so that it is all fully supported.

Consider what it will be like to use when descending as well as when ascending.

Don’t do it.

Yes run is were you place your foot. What would you suggest as a better option?

Photo needed.

Is there a good handrail? That can make a lot of difference.
