Stone Cladding

I have recently purchased a property with stone cladding. I obviously need to be rid of this eyesore ASAP and was wondering if a typical sand cement render would be acceptable after the cladding has been removed. I suppose the brick still needs to be breathable to avoid damp.
Any helpful advice would be appreciated!
