Strain on Unsupported Cables- What is It?

I've often see reference on here to strain relieving the cables. Would someone mind explaining the requirement and risks associated with not clipping or trunking the cables in a domestic setting. Ta.

Strain relief usually refers to the need for clamping the cable sheath in accessories so that there is no 'strain' on the wires in the terminals and so that they will not be pulled out or worn by constant movement.

Obviously, if there is a long unsupported length of cable then its own weight could eventually cause damage, or it is likely to be caught and pulled by passing objects.

Just common sense really.
