Strange object

We have a damp issue on this wall and after removing the plaster to investigate, I found this object in the wall, it appears to have a pipe coming into it from below. Any ideas what it is?
The house was built in 1909.

Given the proximity to the electrical back box, it looks to me as if it could be some old steel electrical conduit...

I did wonder if it was one of those, but theres doesn't appear to be a removable plate on the front, I'll try to remove the rest of the plaster to double check.

As you can see the screw threads, the plate has been removed, and the box has been filled with plaster!
