Stuck taps

Hi,

I'm planning on installing a new bathroom suit, so I need to turn off the water supplies. However I can’t for the life of me move any of the taps (gate valves) around the hot water tank, or on the outlet of the cold tank.

Is there a trick to this or is it just brute force? If it is brute force, how do I prevent damaging the pipework that supports them? Thanks.

Suggest you renew these as well as they are prone to sticking
