I'd like to mount a tv on a wall but have found out that the wall used to have a doorway through it. From the looks (and sound) of it, the doorway was covered up by some form of chipboard and then wallpapered over.

Obviously I don't fancy mounting a heavy 40inch tv through simple chip board, even the wall bracket weighs a ton!

All I can think of is securing some form of metal strips or plates to the wall using the stronger sections of wall either side of the door. And then securing the bracket to the plates? This though might end up making the even more heavier?

Could anyone offer me any advice or alternative methods? Or would I need to get someone in to brick or cement to doorway up properly?

assuming its a doorway
the doorway is likly to be 30" wide plus linings and small space =34"+3"x2 to reach brick/wall thats 40"

dependant on what you use you are likly to get flexing over this length with the weight

you may find the origional door is in situ and may if its a sturdy door take the weight

Thanks for the reply big-all

I'm 90% sure that there is no door in situ. And going by the other doors in my flat if it were it wouldn't be strong enough to hold my tv.

Given that as you say the width of the door would create bowing, how about creating the strips vertically like this?

I could attach the metal strips via the solid portion above the doorframe?

Here's a follow up to my post.

I've managed to source a 3mm thick strip of mild steel which I'll use to bridge the gap. I'll just use one thick strip placed horizontally. It should be plenty thick enough to not bow with the weight of a lcd. It certainly feels hefty!

A question regarding mounting the whole lot to the wall.. I estimate everything to weigh about 30kg. Given this I intended securing the strip to the wall with 4x 3inch screws. Does this sound suitable?

Also from what I've seen of the wall, it's comprised of what I would term 'breeze block' type concrete material. That is to say when I've drilled into it it's come out grey and dusty. Does this material sound suitable to hold 30kg?

Any advice greatly appreciated.
