ok, I have recently cured the cause of this wood rot in our wooden conservatory (water ingress) and it has caused quite a bit of damage. Is that some kind of fungus that has been growing ?

I'm assuming its a matter of digging out all of the rotten wood and filling with wood filler ? I will be painting throughout soon so as long as I can sand it that will be fine. Or do I use a wood hardener ?

I would be grateful for any suggestions, thank you.

I repaired a garage door with Timbabuild, a two part epoxy wood repair filler, that sets slightly flexibly but can be sanded and painted. That helped when the wood I spliced in for the repair (meranti) wasn't a perfect fit.

Blup

Take off the soft surface and any in the joint, then soak it well with a liquid hardener before filling.

Yep, that's what I was thinking - its quite soft in places but I guess the hardener will take care of that. Picking up some hardener tomorrow and will give it a good soaking - I already have some wood filler.

Cheers.

wood hardener whilst the correct term is a bad descriptive name
it doesn't harden wood or give it any strength it just covers it in the equivalent off hair spray so remove as much off the soft material as you can and be prepared to splice in a new bit off wood
