Supporting a partially removed chimney (Ed.)

hi all
wondering if i could add a few gallows barckets and steel to support the chimmney? im wondering if i could cut 6mm into the motor/brick and slide the steel plate in.
we had a sructual engineer out he suggested that we run a rsj from piller to piller but i feel this is excessive as there was no room for gallows bracket

Why not post a pic showing the chimney stack above the roof.
Whats your purpose in proposing to prop up the chimney breast gathering?

hey ree theres no chimney stack it has been removed , the structual engineer said we needed to prop up this up thanks

If you are going to ignore a Structural Engineer, just do what you feel is right, lol.

If the stacks are gone I'm struggling to see what needs supporting - is it the void below the purlins? Also, did he assess the stability of the remaining masonry - it's not unheard of for that triangle to be sucked over by the wind when the chimney breasts are removed, modern gables are usually well strapped to the roof.

Why couldn't he explain this 'other way round'??

Generally chimney flues in the loft space are supported on ether a steel beam (though you need an internal load-bearing wall plus sufficient wall at the side of the window) or suitably secured gallows brackets.

OP,
I asked about the stack to see if you had a stack, and if it was shared or was it on a gable?
My purpose with the propping question was to see if you were having to prop because the chimney breasts below the loft floor had been removed or were about to be removed?

So - is the chimney breast gathering on a gable wall or a party wall?
Has chimney breast support been removed below the loft floor?

ok yeah the previous owners removed the chimney up untill the loft were it has been supported with wooden joists and its on a gable end no neighbours

What needs to be propped? And where is it proposed to be propped? It's not clear what needs to be done from those photos

Then whats the point of propping - why not simply remove the loft chimney breasts?
At the moment the chimney breasts are a potential liability.
But as poster #7 cautioned, it would be best to tie-in the gable to the rafters in the loft.
The gable pike (triangle) appears to be a random stone wall so steel tie-straps will have to be bedded into the wall, & screwed in across, say, three rafters.
