We are looking at refurbing our kitchen & there is an alcove which currently houses the fridge. We were wondering if we could knock this down, but we don't want to if it's a supporting wall. Are there any ways of knowing for certain?

Yes check the wall from above to see if there is any load on the wall itself, if it is brick I would recommend to see if any load is on the wall,
